Scan-vs-BIM

Tracking state changes by comparing reality capture data with existing BIM models

Scan-vs-BIM is an innovative conceptual idea that emerged from the following observation: since an increasing number of projects (eventually all of them) are designed with Building Information Modelling (BIM), then their control using reality capture technology (e.g. laser scanning and photogrammetry) could be dramatically automated by leveraging the detailed, semantic and accurate information contained in those as-designed BIM models.

As the core of Scan-vs-BIM is the registration of all reality capture data (2D, 3D, ...) in the coordinate system of the project BIM model. The resulting spatial alignment supports robust and efficient (even automated) recognition of various building components, which then enables the extraction of highly valuable information (picking up the fruit) such as automated progress and quality control (e.g. dimensional control).

The rapid development of (now both static or mobile), is revolutionizing how the 3D state of the real world (construction site or operating facility or infrastructure) can be acquired. With the advent of Building Information Modelling (BIM), activities like construction dimensional control can be re-thought on the basis of a Scan-vs-BIM framework.

Regarding the dimensional control, the density and speed of acquisition of tnovel reality capture technologies, like laser scanning and photogrammetry (now both static and mobile), means that dimensional surveying can be fully re-thought from a point-based approach to a surface-based one. As part of our Scan-vs-BIM work, we have contributed new data processing techniques and algorithms, built on top of our in-house Scan-vs-BIM framework, that harness the power of all the technologies above to provide robust, repeatable, accurate and automated solutions to common construction dimensional control, e.g. flatness control.

Our work in Scan-vs-BIM is currently developed as part of the Horizon2020 COGITO project that started at the end of 2020.

Videos

This video shows the Scan-vs-BIM software system we developed to demonstrate its potential use for construction progress. In fact, the main value of this approach lies in its capability to automatically segment the input point cloud into the sub- point clouds corresponding to each object making up the 3D model.
